John IV Komnenos

John IV Komnenos
Emperor of Trebizond (qq.v.) from 14291459. He came to power by assassinating his father in 1429 and spent the rest of his reign defending Trebizond from Ottoman sultans Murad II and Mehmed II (qq.v.). A large-scale attack on the city in 1456 forced John to pay tribute to the Ottomans, and to organize a coalition of neighboring Turkish tribes to defend the city. However, none of this helped his successor, the final emperor of Trebizond, David I Komnenos (1459-1461), who was forced to surrender Trebizond to the Ottomans on 15 August 1461 after Mehmed II surrounded the city with a huge expeditionary force.
